The Partnach Gorge in the Garmisch area
From the Olympic Ski Stadium near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, take the Wildenauer Straße to reach the Partnach Gorge. The trail can be covered on foot (about a 20-minute walk) or by horse-drawn carriage. The gorge is clearly audible even from a distance. The cool water cascading down the rocks reaches a volume of up to 100 decibels.
Waterfalls, rapids, pools – all this awaits you upon entering the gorge. Impressive, powerful, and beautiful. These are words that well describe the approximately 10.000-year-old gorge. The mountain river "Partnach" carves its way bit by bit into the rock and grows. Steadily. About one centimeter per year. It goes through the stone. Through blasted tunnels and passages. Over an iron bridge. The gorge has offered adventurers a path of about 700 meters with nine Tunnel systems It's hardly surprising that it's the second most popular tourist destination in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with approximately 200.000 visitors a year.
Historical use of the gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen
The Partnach Gorge was once important for mountain agriculture. The forest above the gorge was cleared, and the timber was transported by water down to the valley. There it was then fished out of the Partnach. This process of drifting, as it was called, was not always without danger. Tree trunks often got caught in the narrow gorge. Therefore, a drifting path was built at the end of the 19th century. Adventurous tourists began using it. As a result, the gorge was expanded in 1910. Tunnels were blasted into the rock, and paths were built. In 1912, the Partnach Gorge was designated a natural monument. In 2006, it was also designated a geosite.
